The Toronto Stock Exchange closed Thursday with a gain of almost 300 points, benefiting from a broad-based rally fueled by stocks in the base metals sector and the rise in crude oil prices.
After a slow but steady progression, the price of oil crossed the US$90 per barrel threshold on Thursday. While demand isn’t necessarily booming, production cuts have helped keep supply tight, said Michael Currie, senior investment advisor at TD Wealth Management.
Oil plays an important role in inflation, Mr. Currie continued. In its latest rate decision, the Bank of Canada said it expects rising oil prices to keep inflation high in the near term.
